Personality: Chris is a down to Earth bloke, when not being shot at. When under fire he is calm and gives orders with a keen tactical mind. Doesn’t like the fact civilians are fighting in the area, and probably won’t allow them in the same combat areas as him due to his time during the Skyllian Blitz. Hates Batarians with a passion, due to being assigned to the Torfan mission. Doesn’t mind Turians or Salarian’s that much, the latter he laughs at due to their tactical capabilities. Off duty, he is approachable and kind to those around him. However, doesn’t suffer fools or traitors to the ‘mission’, will likely take lethal action against those who are in that category if need be. Will put his life ahead of his unit or civilians in cross-fire. Doesn’t see the different between a husk or an indoctrinated human. (Both are threats in his mind).
History
Early History
Born in March 2156 in Exeter, Britain. To Margaret and Rick Masterdon, Chris’ life was usual for those days. His father a marine in the 14th Home Guard, while his mother was a chef. Chris was only a year old when the First Contact War broke out. He remembers very little of it, except for his father was ‘away’. During this, he spent more time with his mother, a habit he would keep until a teenager. When he was old enough he attended school, again his father being ‘away’ though this time at the local pub than fighting aliens.
A notable instance was in year 5 when another kid said that the Turian’s beat Chris’ father up and he gave up information and that’s why the Turians won. Chris went into the fight and didn’t give up until pulled away by a teacher. Chris was banned for a week for the incident but nothing more. His father hearing this, simply shrugged and went back to the pub. This didn’t change at all even after high school. Though he did find his mother was far more approachable and learnt skills such as how to cook with the minimum of ingredients, and how to feed 20 people with supplies only for 10. Important lessons he used on the battlefields later in his life. When he turned 18 he applied for service in the Systems Alliance Navy.
During Systems Alliance
Being accepted was a great honour for Chris, a day he wouldn’t forget, when he graduated the course his father was there. Watching, when Chris stared at him in disbelief. The man saluted, nodded and then walked away, possibly back to the pub and his bar stool he used for the past two decades. After extended gene therapy from Aldrin Labs, and combat course using Hahne-Kadar weaponry he was classified as a B4. During this, he applied for officer training in Berlin Officer Training Course.. or “BOT”. At first he thought he wouldn’t make the grade and it was indeed showing, his grades were failing until he had a chance encounter.. Running late to small group tactics class he ran straight into Captain Hackett, a man who would later lead an entire fleet. The talk was only for one minute, and neither would say what each of them spoke about. But from that moment on, Chris was a different man. And one year later passed his course at the top 3%, and granting the rank of Second Lieutenant. In addition, he was now being assigned to the planet Elysium.
Skyllian Blitz / Torfan
Now Second Lieutenant Chris Masterdon, who was young officer which served with a Commander Bailey during the Skyllian Blitz in 2176. Chris was new to command and lead a small strike force to destroy the landing craft that the pirates where using that were too fast for the Alliance Navy to engage. He led the team and fought an extremely brutal battle, until the enemy retreated. He lost all but four marines; He remembers those who die under his command, name, rank and serial number. In addition, will never forget them, like others of British decent He reads out persons name and says ‘Lest We Forget’.
Masterdon later joined the units at Torfan, when the Alliance engages what to be a Batarian base under Major Kyle, the battle was a win for the Alliance but Chris lost so many friends that day. Chris has no ‘real’ issues with alien personnel except for the Batarians, who he will never trust or co-operate with. With that he was assigned to the “Program” which included how humans would work with soldiers from alien species. This was cancelled when it was revealed that the program was a front for a group called “Cerberus”. An anti-alien extremist group, that was around at the time. Alliance Command decided to assign him to the Cruiser Brisbane, under the command of Jonathan Riley. Riley was an old officer with the old gentleman view but he liked marines more than anything and due to Chris’ actions on Elysium. Jonathan gave Chris command of his cruiser’s strike team. And later a promotion to First Lieutenant.
Serving on the Brisbane
For the first few months, nothing really happened. The Batarians stayed in their space, the council races weren’t invading like some news outlets said they were. Everything was peaceful, that was till late 2183, when news about an attack on Eden Prime aired. The Brisbane was in the neighbouring system orbiting Terra Nova when the call came through. Captain Riley gave the order to intercept hoping to get there in time. Fortunately for Eden Prime the Normandy was close by and saved the colony. Chris’ team was on the ground immediately after the Brisbane secured the area. What he found was, horrifying. He was use to warfare, that of pirates and later Batarians but what the Geth did to the colonists he couldn’t believe. His unit was assigned to patrol the outer sectors looking for any survivors of the 212 or the 232. The 222 was nearly devastated and was pulled out. The unit found one survivor, who was trapped under some debris named Ricky. When signalling that they had found someone, Ricky ran off into some buildings. Signalling his men to stay he ran after the man. To find spikes with people still attached to them, Ricky started to rant that they were being perfected. Trying to pull the man away the spikes retracted to send what would later be called ‘Husks’ at the man. Chris pulled back after killing two of the creatures to call for an air strike. He had lost Ricky during the fire fight and got back to his unit to find they also got attacked by Husks with one of his team members wounded. The airstrike came in an laid waste to the area, a M35 Mako later picked up the wounded soldier and got the soldier back to a med station. Chris’ report about the incident was covered up not to scare colonists and colony investors about the situation. The Brisbane later took part in the battle of the citadel, which it suffered only slight damage. After this, he was reassigned back to Earth.
Earth once more
Coming back to Earth was a complete shock to Chris, he hadn’t seen it since 76, first thing he did was to check on his mother to see if she was okay. But he found his father instead, his father spoke only a few words. “Your Mother went to the Citadel on business…she didn’t come back”. Distraught at this, Chris simply shut down. He wouldn’t eat or sleep and just sat there in his old room. His father came in later and sat down and talked. Saying that he had friends who told him what Chris had done and that Chris was there and helped kill Sovereign. Even though it was purely a navy issue and Chris had no part his father nether the less was glad his son killed the thing that killed his mother. He was assigned to teach small group tactics at Berlin, this was due to his new rank of Staff Lieutenant. Teaching the course which he nearly failed eight years ago amused him. During this time, the Collectors started to attack outer human colonies. Chris immediately went to his superior and asked to join the defence of human colonies against the Collectors. He was approved and joined the task force under the dreadnaught Matterhorn. The task force sadly arrived too late for the colonies such as Ferris Fields and New Canton. Chris’ felt that the Alliance betrayed those people due to the fact Cerberus was involved. But he kept it to himself, he was reassigned to the Matterhorn as security chief.
Matterhorn
Serving on the Matterhorn was a big difference to the Brisbane, being bigger didn’t mean better. His room was the size of a coffin, due to this he spent more time on the crew deck playing cards or cooking meals when the ship’s cook was busy. The Matterhorn was later reassigned back to Earth after a stand off with the Batarian dreadnaught Bangarsh due to Commander Shepard blowing up the Bahak Relay. The Matterhorn exchanged fire with the Bangarsh for approximately one hour, until the Bangarsh withdrew due to alliance reinforcements. The Matterhorn was assigned to the Second Fleet but due to new equipment such Thanix cannons becoming available. She was ordered back to the Luna shipyards for refit; and repair the damage from the earlier with the Bangarsh. During this time, Chris was allowed to have some shore leave.
Reaper Attack!
During his shore leave a one in a million occurrence happened… the Reaper’s invaded Earth. Caught off guard he regrouped with a group of alliance soldiers trying to assist civilians escaping the area. Little did he know, but one this day he finally got promoted to Lieutenant Commander. However, until he finds an Omnitool or a mail centre he doesn’t know.
Roleplay Example
New York City
The smoke filled the sky, so much that any sunlight that could breach it looked like what the movies called “God Rays”. Chris wiped the dirt and ash from his eyes. In the distance he could hear the crunching of metal and concrete indicating a Reaper was nearby destroying hundreds if not thousands of lives. He couldn’t dwell on that, probably everywhere these kilometre sized enemies were laying death upon worlds. Some he probably didn’t even know existed, sighing he checked the clip of his used M8 Avenger assault rifle. The M8 became the Alliance standard rifle due to its cheapness and reliability. But offhand he missed his Lancer. He had only 20 rounds left, not enough to stop a horde of husks. However, it was enough to do some damage if needed. He started to move in the direction of what he remembered of New York spaceport. The Spaceport was where the old United Nations building was located. He hoped that a shuttle was there, that could take him into the fight.. or hopefully just some thermal clips. “Thermal clips, the advancement of technology… yeah I bet you they’re all wishing they had guns that could cool down. I would give my finger for my old M7 Lancer..”he spoke quietly laughing at the response until he realised..he was talking to himself. First sign of instability was showing itself. He shook it off, as he turned down an ally he saw several husks on the other end. Just standing around, minding their own business. Then if someone was controlling their strings they began to move..towards his location.
“Damn it”he whispered as he looked around, the closest building as a pub. Chris quickly ran inside, the lighting was flickering. He aimed at the door, and nothing came inside. ‘Probably saying, who in their right mind would be in a pub during an invasion’ he thought and smiled. Till the question came back, his own father would probably be at the pub in Exeter. ‘Hope the tough bastard got out okay’he thought as he checked the Avenger again… Doo doo doo doo doo doothe noise of a quasar machine started to blare indicating a winner. He move closer and closer, he readied himself and turned.. to see a drone…its orange and gold colours spinning around. Floating above the console, the machine started up once more. “Oi, get out of here!”Chris shooed it away. The Drone hovered away probably to find a machine without an organic near it. Shaking his head, he found a window and climbed out onto a side street. There was no sign of anyone, organic or cybernetic or even hovering drones. Looking down both ways as he walked slowly down the street he reached the corner, moving his head slightly he made sure only his left eye could be seen. The sight before him wasn’t pretty. Allot of dead bodies, then he saw something else..it moved to a corpse and started tearing at the flesh. He was hard pressed to keep his stomach in check as the creature that looked like an overstuffed Batarian continued to eat. ‘It’s busy, I can move past it when it moves to another’ he thought as he waited. The sight, the bodies sickened him. It reminded him of Elysium, Torfan, and Eden Prime all in one. But he was trained for this, engaging the enemy of humanity. He wasn’t trained to take on a two kilometre sized walking spider thing.
Turning the corner he noticed the creature had turned its back on him. He rushed forward, his Adrenaline pumping throughout his body was pushing him further. He jumped over a barricade and slid under a gate which was in the way. It felt like hours he’d been running when it was probably only minutes. He stopped as he reached another area, and looked back…nothing was there. His heart continued to beat faster and faster. He closed his eyes, and tried to slow it down. The beat started to slow..but not completely. He heard a noise and snapped into action, his Avenger aiming at the enemy. The cat just stared at him, and continued on its way. He hoped there wouldn’t be converted cats later on. With a quick check on the area he quickly gained enough momentum to get to another checkpoint. The checkpoint offcourse was deserted, it looked like a battle happened..there was red and blue blood everywhere. He rummaged through the debris trying to find a thermal clip. Then a glint on a debris field nearby got his attention..reaching down he found a M3 Predator. Made by the Turian’s it had become standard throughout militaries. It humoured him that a Turian pistol and a Volus rifle was on Earth being used against the ‘Reapers’.
Checking the pistol, it registered as holding 10 rounds. Sighing he started to really hate commands decision to use Geth technology. It was a way backwards, not forwards. The Geth didn’t have to worry about manpower or supply issue. They were damn machines, Organics needed supply lines..they needed weapons that would be reliable. Again, he wished he had his M7 Lancer once more. The weapon was stored on the Matterhorn in his bunk. He looked up to the darkened sky and wondered if she escaped or fighting the enemy or was she one of the many debris field falling down once in a while from space.
Moving out, every noise created echoes throughout the streets. It seemed the Husks were doing a good job of getting rid of everyone. He began his trip down another street when he heard a roaring noise, flattening himself on the nearby wall he waited for it. A UT-47 Kodiak shuttle screamed past, he was about to call to it when a winged creature burst out of the building he was using as a shield. Quickly rolling out of the way, he stared in shock as the winged creature fired red bolts of energy at the Kodiak, the Kodiak in turn did a 180 in flight and fired back before speeding off down another street. The wing creature followed in hot pursuit, he hoped the blokes on the shuttle would be alright. But so far, what he’d seen their chances weren’t that great. Then the sound he have heard on many battlefields but not on Earth..gunfire. He was running towards it, turning the corner he saw several husks. He aimed and fired, tetetetetetetetetete the Avenger rattled in anger. The Husks got mowed down, as he continued to run he saw a group of soldiers making a stand. One of them saw him and put his hand up, and indicated he should approach. “Thanks, who’s in command here?” he asked. A man with dark skin nodded to him. “I am, and you are?” the man asked. He was wearing a dress uniform of an admiral. Chris wasn’t going to say anything to screw this situation up. “Staff Leftenant Masterdon, Sir” he said giving a sluggish salute. “Right now Lieutenant your with me. Were trying to evac anyone we can and then continue the fight. You good?” he asked staring at the now empty Avenger. “Wouldn’t mind some clips, but I’m game” Chris responded, the man pointed to a small supply box. Reloading the clips on both weapons he was ready for it. “Admiral, shuttle 3, 4 and 5 are ready”the pilot said to the darkened skin man. “Okay, everybody find a shuttle. Were leaving!”. Chris hopped onboard the nearest shuttle, the eyes of the others were apparent, they had faced their own hell. The Kodiak lifted up and sped away, to what destination he didn’t know.
Over London
After a few close calls, the Kodiak continued on its course. Chris started to lay back, he needed some shut eye before the next battle. WHAM!. Chris was thrown forward, his bare hands slamming into the cold metal. The shock wave moved along up his arms. “Hold on! We got bogies!” yelled the pilot. The craft swerved from one direction to the next, Chris grabbed the handle and braced himself for the impacts. WHAM!. The shuttle seemed to have taken another hit from enemy fire. He just hoped it wasn’t one of those flying things. “Brace for impact! Mayday. Mayday. Mayday. This is shuttle four. We are going down at waypoint gold.. I repeat..we are..”his voice and those of the other soldiers. Some praying, others cursing went silent as the craft skidded along the ground.
Chris’ eyes opened, the pain he was feeling was intense. But he was trained for this..well not for being inside a crashing Kodiak, they never covered that in training. Pushing another soldier off him, he noticed from the man’s neck that he was dead. Moving to get himself off his feet he noticed others weren’t moving. Kicking the door once, then twice the door finally opened. Getting out, he grabbed his Avenger and scoped out the scenery in front. He could tell from the landmarks that they were in London, and from the looks of it. It wasn’t in any better shape than New York. Looking back, he noticed another soldier get out and dust himself off. “What’s the status of the others?”Chris asked the other man.“Dead..they’re all dead…”the other man replied. Chris put his hand on the man’s shoulder. “Then its up to us, to give their deaths meaning.”he said with a nod. As the two man began their journey into the unknown.
